March Wrap Up

In March we designed, built, and fabricated a range of prime mover conversions, tipper trucks, beavertail trays, trailer combinations, and chassis extensions. To wrap up one of our busiest months, one of our favourite jobs was a Kenworth prime mover conversion, which involved a chassis stretch to fit a custom 5 metre tipper body. 

KW Wheelbase Extension

One of the tricky aspects of this project was that the original Kenworth prime mover length was just too short to fit a reasonably sized tipper body. This meant that we needed to do some careful planning and design to ensure we could maximise the capacity of the tipper and allow the customer to use this truck to its maximum potential. Our client was involved at every step of the process, inspecting all of the workmanship as the build progressed. 

We first performed a wheelbase extension according to the Kenworth manufacturer instructions, stretching the chassis by approximately 700-800mm. We adjusted the tail shafts, checked all the driveline angles and extended all of the intricate electronics and pneumatic airlines. This was followed by professional in-house painting to match the existing chassis colour, and inspection by our in-house engineer who issued a VASS certificate of compliance.  

The benefit of having a wheelbase extension and truck body fitted all in one place saves our clients lots of time and hassle and provides peace of mind that the same technicians are working on both aspects of the truck project. 

Extending the chassis meant that we could then fit a 5 metre long tipper body, with 1 metre high sides. The client also requested that we fabricate the tailgate to be 150mm taller than the sides for this specific truck, which was specific to the types of jobs he would be doing. Finally, we completed the job with a state of the art, dedicated, truck only hydraulic tipping system.
